APOD: 2020 September 9 - Pleiades: The Seven Sisters Star Cluster

Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Pleiades: The Seven Sisters Star Cluster." Also known as Messier 45 (M45 in its short form), the Pleiades lies about 400 light years away toward the constellation of Taurus. Galileo first viewed the Pleiades through a telescope, and discovered that the cluster contains many stars too dim to be seen with the naked eye. He published his observations, including a sketch of the Pleiades showing 36 stars, in his treatise Sidereus Nuncius in March 1610.
If you are up early in the morning this time of year (before sunup), you can see Taurus and the Pleiades northwest of Orion (just follow the line of Orion's belt). The nine brightest stars of the Pleiades are named for the Seven Sisters of Greek mythology: Sterope, Merope, Electra, Maia, Taygeta, Celaeno, and Alcyone, along with their parents Atlas and Pleione.

"Explanation: Have you ever seen the Pleiades star cluster? Even if you have, you probably have never seen it as large and clear as this. Perhaps the most famous star cluster on the sky, the bright stars of the Pleiades can be seen without binoculars from even the depths of a light-polluted city. With a long exposure from a dark location, though, the dust cloud surrounding the Pleiades star cluster becomes very evident. The featured exposure covers a sky area several times the size of the full moon. Also known as the Seven Sisters and M45, the Pleiades lies about 400 light years away toward the constellation of the Bull (Taurus). A common legend with a modern twist is that one of the brighter stars faded since the cluster was named, leaving only six of the sister stars visible to the unaided eye. The actual number of Pleiades stars visible, however, may be more or less than seven, depending on the darkness of the surrounding sky and the clarity of the observer's eyesight."

I have heard this story before. I follow the program Ancient Aliens and do believe in the possibility of life other than our in the universe. The Native Americans are very wizen in the knowledge of the stars.
