Former Redskins to play upcoming season as 'Washington Football Team'
Washington's NFL team announced Thursday that it would play the upcoming season as the "Washington Football Team" while it continues to consider a name and logo to replace "Redskins." "The decision to use 'Washington Football Team' for this season allows the franchise the ability to undertake an in-depth branding process to properly include player, alumni, fan, community, and sponsor input," the team said in a statement. The Washington, D.C., franchise ditched its controversial old name under pressure from sponsors and activists, who argued that it was racist toward Native Americans. Suggested new names pitched by fans have included "Warriors," "Red Tails," and "Red Wolves." [USA Today]

Just heard about this on the radio, nice that they are specifying what sport they're playing.

Instead of taking the Redskin name away, maybe they should take the name Washington away, didn't you know he had slaves, How much more of this Politically Correct Crap do we have to put up with, wake up America!

To what? Is it not fair to discuss the good and the bad of historical figures? I mean, Washington did own slaves. From what I’ve read he ensured that they were kept in decent health, but that is it. That they had to steal supplies to fix their clothes when they became worn out, often were barely given enough food, and were beaten for speaking up. He kept them in slavery until his dying breath.

Why should that be ignored? He was our founding father and did many great things. But that doesn’t excuse the wrongs he did, either.
