Mental modeling....ok. I suppose this comes from the commander's mission of visualizing the battlefield. The operational inter play of factors of time, force, and space. The rational calculus forms their understanding of the environment (framing the problem) and really, it cognitively is not that different than the theory of constraints. First state the problem, make sure it is the right problem. Every problem boils down the to a handful of variables, in which you either have to overcome or subordinate your systems/processes to succeed. This article made it seem ethereal and at no time really discussed what those mental models were. Patton was great because he read Greek philosophy and Sherlock Holmes. PFC (Join to see)

Great article. I don't think we are prepared for the next war or the flexibility of thought that it will take to be successful. Our leadership doesn't seem to want to study historic battles and tactics, assuming incrrectly, that there is nothing to be learned and that technology will conquer all.

Lt Col Charlie Brown LTC Jason Mackay Yes, I agree. I think the last 20+ years of conducting warfare where everything has gone down on our terms has contributed to a military that gives little thought to outthinking an enemy. As a plan writer I also agree that a plan is only good on the day it is approved by higher authorities and the first hour after it is implemented. After that you must be prepared to adjust or totally walk away from the plan and a thorough understanding of historical battles and tactics is essential when this occurs. I pretty much agree with Gen Mattis that there is no situation that has not been encountered before, but if it takes hours, or days, of research to to know how to react you've lost the edge.

Lt Col Charlie Brown - too often, even in heavily academic settings like the War colleges, readers left to their own devices take away the wrong lesson

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen - we've had to out think the enemy, just at a different scale. Fighting a decentralized group of enemies that is organized more like McDonalds franchisees opposed to a centrally controlled and directed enemy is just a lit different.
