About

Taekwondo is the Korean art of Self Defense and National sport of Korea. Taekwondo means the Way of the Hand and Foot. It was established over 60 years ago in the 1940s by a group of Korean martial arts masters who wanted to teach a traditional Korean style over the Japanese and Chinese style that had pervaded the Korean peninsula following its occupation by Japan in 1911. The term "Taekwondo" was coined by South Korean general Choi Hong Hi in the 1950s following a meeting to unify all of the separate Kwans (schools) into one organization.

The major organizations today involved in Taekwondo include the World Taekwondo Federation, Kukkiwon and the International Taekwon-do Federation, which is currently splintered into two separate ITF organizations.
