When I heard about the sugar tax being discussed on NPR and in Canada I thought it was another liberal version of a carbon tax but instead on gasoline, it was against the people in general who drink soda/ pop. It's called pop here in Canada and I knew it as soda in California. I thought then, as I do now, that this is an unfair tax. If kids are going to be diabetic over one or two cans of Coke or Pepsi a day, that I blame the parents for not making sure they have enough physicals and exercise. If the kid looks like Augustus Gloop in with the Willy Wonka movies, he is predisposed to be overweight and the soda tax wont make much difference. I am 54 years old and I drink up to one litre a day of Dr. Pepper. I weigh between 160 and 185 lb over the last 20 years . I'm 5 foot 11 . I don't think I should be paying a tax on soda especially if the same price for a small drink at an average restaurants almost $2 when I can buy a 2 liter bottle at Walmart for a dollar sixty on sale . Though I walk 25,000 steps a day working for a courier service, I'm sure many of you go on the treadmill and do exercise and maintain your weight. I don't know how politicians and nieve health people came up with the idea of taxing soda with the excuse of trying to help the kids when the unintended consequence was it was bringing the food and beverage industry down. I bet the politicians in the health professionals drink alcohol and many of them are obese already and they should be doing exercise just as much as the children should be. No one says this about drinking alcohol which does convert alcohol into sugar. Though the state and federal government taxes the hell out of it already. People get fat drinking cases of beer. I see people lining up at 10 in the morning to buy alcohol in Canada and some idiots even take their kids with them. Functioning alcoholics. I'm just so glad at the social justice Warriors are losing on three fronts. They're losing on the sugar tax front, they're losing with this NFL situation and they're losing with President Trump not believing in climate change and unwilling to tax of people unfairly on junk science. I'm glad the sugar tax is being defeated in Chicago. Personally, I detest drinking. My wife and I belonged to Alcoholics Anonymous. We don't drink. My wife hasn't had a drink in 20 years. I haven't had a drink in over 12 years. Suicides and drinking are common and her family. My sister committed suicide two years ago related to depression, drinking and taking painkillers. If you have a drinking problem, seek professional help and I recommend going to Alcoholics Anonymous. Drinking or not drinking glasses of soft drinks won't make much of a difference if you are already eating too much and not working out at all.

What's pop? You mean soda? A little regional humor there!

Good.
I saw when this went into effect and wasn't amused at all...and I don't even live in Cook County.
It was REAL easy to see what was happening, with just a few minutes with their own figures and a calculator.
Fortunately, Cook County residents and businesses straightened their representatives out.
Unfortunately, there's still a lot of fallout to be dealt with before it's all settled.

the Cook County assessor's office where Jake and Elwood were being chased by the police the Illinois Army National Guard while trying to pay their property tax bill for their orphanage. There must still be some Illinois Nazis in their school board that want to tax the hell out of you. I'm glad this is failing.

I think a sugar tax is well intentioned. I don't think it will work anymore than increasing the tax on tobacco did. It was unbelievable when I watched you folks in Canada. The price of tobacco is incredibly high.. More than $17.00 a pack. Yet most of you still smoke like fiends. Worse, you guys will run out on a break and friggin hotbox a couple cigarettes in 10 minutes.
Furthermore, I have had Canadian cigarettes, buddy they are pure horseshit, not a fart in the pack.
Horrible.

Addicts will do whatever it takes to get to smoke. The kids in Canada are weirdos they walk around with hoodies when it's 90° out they smoke cigarettes and you see lots of people smoking cigarettes and riding bicycles that are in their 50s which means they're poor or they have a suspended license. The sugar tax on suppose it's fat kids and raising taxes on cigarettes makes no difference in Canada because people will still smoke. Addicts are addicts. Idiots are idiots.

@ LTC. (VTS) & P.O. 3 J. Wagner:
I think calling a tax a sugar tax and not putting it forward to help diabetics and kids with rotting teeth
Is wrong and those collecting the tax should be punished with a tax for not using tax for what they say it is intended (misrepresentation of tax use).
On tobacco... have been to Canada and i’ve had some cigars there and at time was surprised at the difference in pricing then.(‘92)
I’m sure the tax people had figured that the cigars were not taxed enough.. and are prob’ly right up cigarettes. I will admit I bought mine at Duty Free Store [ a limited amt is authorized]but there is some base tax on them. (I think it was health related [IMHO])..I had a cigar one of my Canadian Vet friends shared with me..(he cut his in half)..
He said at that time taxes were more acceptable on cigars.. but he still only had one every few days..(he figured it out that if he bought a 7.5” cigar and cut in half it was less expensive than purchasing the little cigars that were 4”(U.S. meas.).. He told me he liked the Duty Free Store and stopped there on the way. Grabbing the legal limit.(. i surmised he stored in a humidor to keep fresh.). taxes so freak’g high up in Canada To pay for all their social warrior programs.. like what the demon rats here in the U.S. want to do to Us. Some goofbal senators suggested charging everybody a “methane tax” .. the farmers would mainly pay on their livestock.. for us it would be for ‘passing gas’... (LoL)... could go further but I leave for another time some day... may both you Fellow RP Comrades in arms have an Awesome day today and in your future days..
