The philosophy behind closing it is nothing more than the tortured machinations of emotionally crippled idiots.

I was stationed at Gitmo from 97-98 in the Security Department and it was much different then we only had to worry about Cuban migrants and Hatian's wanting to be free. Most the time the Hatians went back to Hati. The Cubians usually got stay until they were cleared thru intel and INS and that ususlly took months and then once cleared they waited months and months to get sent to a Spanish speaking country that would accept them. That was hard to deal with because you had got to know them, but we didn't give any details of our personnel life to them. I cannot imagine what it's like to deal with terrorists that want to kill you the minute they could get a chance. It's a Catch-22 for Gitmo.

They are insidious. I was there in 2002, and they definitely tried to get into guard's heads. One of the most challenging missions, especially for medical personnel and the guard force. An emotional train wreck is what I called it. Some couldn't handle it and had to be reassigned. As the mission progressed we got better at orientation and training. The al Qaeda training manuals the allies had captured came in handy because it explained some of the methodology. They were trained to LIE about their treatment, claim they were tortured, lawyer up ASAP, etc. Very nasty group. 731 have been RELEASED.

Probably not when I was there 97-98 they had two of them. Been up that river a few times when HP needed a rider. Also, been out to Watergate a few times when people were fishing and were getting to close.
