I just tell them thank you and it was my pleasure to serve and that I would do it all over again and let it go at that. I don't expect and neither should any other veteran expect anything "free" in return for their service. Most of the people who have never served just want to say thank you but they don't know how so a simple thank you for your service is all they can do. So I honor them back by tell them thank you for letting me serve and if I have their ear for a minute I also tell them don't waste veterans service or memories...get out and vote and support and support your community...that is what we fought for.

It's not rocket science. I tell them it was an honor to serve in the military.

I say, "No need for thanks, I enjoyed it. Thank my wife, she's the one who had to move her house every three years." Or a simple, "You're welcome."
