I'm currently in transition in a WTB unit and was told by the company 1SG that I can not wear my diamond while in the WTB. I am still the 1SG of my unit and have not had a change-of-responsibility. I have researched AR 40-58 (WTB Reg) and some other regs but can not find anything that mandates this diamond removal. I feel as though this is more of a personal issue for the company 1SG versus an Army mandated policy. Any help is greatly appreciated.

What is your rank and duty position?
Are you TDY to the WTU, or have you been reassigned?
You didn't just pin on 1SG rank when assigned to the position, and I'm not certain you have the authority to laterally appoint yourself from 1SG to MSG.
I'm certain that 1SG isn't the lateral appointment authority, though.
If the 1SG wants that to happen, he should submit paperwork to have it done.
I suggest requesting an appointment with the first CSM in the WTU NCOSC to request clarification.

Orders determines position, place or rank; no orders no lateral. I once saw a CSM stay for two years in WTU, it took a BDE CSM to finally get his orders done so he could fill the empty and out going CSM.

Not being Army, I can't comment on whether it's within his power or not... but I CAN say that it's helluva petty. That 1SG seems to have no concept of professional courtesy to fellow senior NCOs.

Hypothetically, if they have administrative authority over you while there.
First Sergeants are kind of like highlanders - there can be only one.

To me 1st sergeant is a rank not a job title. In the Marine Corps you have an E-8 First Sergeant or an E-8 Master Sergeant. There is no E-8 rank insignia that does not include the diamond or crossed rifles, unless things have changed since '67.

Yes, this is true; however, there is a 1SG appointment authority in the U.S. Army who issues Appointment Orders. I imagine that any changes must be approved by the concerned authority, in writing. If the WTB 1SG is insecure in his/her post then, requesting approval for lateral assignment through appropriate channel must be made. Senior NCOES don't pin-on and remove ranks.

I would hazard a guess that as long as your are still assigned to your unit back home you are still their 1SG. You were laterally appointed 1SG by your commander as long as he is still your commander then its his perogative. This is one of the situations where you have to weigh the cost of wearing your rightful rank agains negative attention from folks who control your short term career. Things may go easier if you just throw MSG rank on and get off the radar. This is just me and I am a bit of an asshole but I would respectfully tell the WTC 1SG thanks for your suggestion I will take it under advisement. I am a retired 1SG and I wear my Uniform with my 1SG rank all the time while at activities with the unit 1SG there and have never had an issue. While its very rare to have 1SG's at WTC back when I worked a MOB platform I saw at least 2 attached to the WTC's and the unit 1SG's had zero issues with them wearing their rank. I don't know the whole story but I would guess the WTC has some kind of uncalled for issue with anyone but him/her wearing the diamond in his unit.

I was appointed the position of 1SG on orders signed by a General so until I get orders reverting me back to Msg I will continue to wear proudly my appointed 1SG stripes. Since I have been retired since 1985, I don't think that is going to happen.

Technically you have every right to wear the diamond. Just be prepared for half the privates in the unit thinking a 1SG is a 1SG and come to you with unit issues. I'm gonna bet you'll spend half your time redirecting them to the actual unit 1SG. Personally I'd just take it off till you get back to your unit . More of a pain in the ass than its worth

I was a 1SG in Hawaii when I was injured in Iraq. This situation is similar to mine, but I did not have to remove my rank at the WTU. If the 1SG has a problem with it then he has to take it up with your unit chain of Command. The reason why is because it is a temporary assignment until the military can determine if you are no longer able to serve. If that ends up being the case, then you will be retired as a MSG. But if you are able to stay in service and found fit for duty then you will be able to return to your unit as the 1SG that your Commander appointed you as.
