River Douro and Dom Luis I bridge in Porto, Portugal
This romantic, industrial port city lent its name not only to Portugal itself, but also to the storied fortified wine that’s been made here for centuries. Portugal is the nation that brings us the distinctive port wine. The cave cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, just south of Porto proper (and over the bridge we see here) is where the spirit's international trade really took off. For that reason, the wine was named after Porto in the late-17th century. The surrounding Douro Valley is the only officially sanctioned producing region for a true port, or 'Porto' wine, in the world.
