She served, She is no longer serving. Look more at her intent in this photo. She is not degrading or desecrating the uniform or her former service. If anything she is showing that even after she has retired, the uniform, and her service, is very much a part of who she is and who she will always be. This is beautiful truth to all who served.

If we go crazy over every little thing and reach deep to try to find reasons to be offended at everything then we become a step closer to the mindset of radical Muslim extremists. Let's not do that, I don't like where that leads.

I am a Vietnam Veteran and I have never put a uniform back on since leaving the Corps, other then wearing my jungle camo jacket or pants for camping. (and never together.) I don't know what the regulations are and don't really care. I'm proud of my service, but I feel it is hugely inappropriate to wear a uniform in any configuration as a civilian. That's just me. The only indications that i exhibit about my former service is an Eagle Globe and Anchor lapel pin and a Vietnam service ribbon sticker on my car. Just my personal feelings.

Lt Col Leigh Ann Redman I would hardly call kneeling in a pond for a photo shoot being, "out in public." This is a very beautiful, and we'll done from a photography standpoint. It embodies what we should strive for as soldiers, veterans and humans. We should respect and protect the world we live in. Not just from our physical enemies, but all enemies. Those that destroy our planet. It came together so perfectly in this photo. I have seen egregious uniform abuses on TV at events. I've seen it at Memorial Day Observances. Not to mention many homeless vets wear their jackets with all rank, iusignia intact. As do Vietnam veterans. I would much rather see this than someone atfu at a Ceremony. This is not only very empowering, but beautiful.

Remember people have done worse thing to and in their uniform. It is a uniform when you serve. For others, it is just a garment.

I’ve never put on all my cammies all at once, but have no problem with her. Seems to me once you’ve done your time & got out with an honorable discharge most of us have worn some parts of our old uniforms.
I do follow most uniform regs and never worn my dress uniforms but if I want to wear if choose to wear some I say ‘F’em if someone has a problem with me doing it. I live in a pro-military community by Joint Base Lewis-McChord and never once had an Army-dog/Air Force guy step up to me with a derogatory comment.
I proudly wear my old Velcro field jacket (even with my Sgt rank on the front in the middle) while skiing or at Supercross with my girls. I even see other guys on there with newer versions and only stopped to BS about who/when we both served.

That is SPC Tonya Yellowhorse. She is from the To'hani Clan(Navajo). To'hani means 'Near the Water'. But checking with my Navajo friends (the ones I personally know), say the Navajo prefer to be called the "Diné" meaning “The People” or “Children of the Holy People”.

And for the record, I don't have an issue with the photo.

SSG Ron Geatches - I realize that this is an old post, but SPC Yellowhorse does have have her rank insignia directly above your right hand, and it's properly placed where it is supposed to be for that style of uniform.
That said, I think this is a great photo. I can't quoted the AR 670, but I see nothing wrong with this photo.

Disrespectful to every woman who has had to work her ass off to be taken seriously and not be looked at as a prop for some agenda. She could have easily done this with her damn hair up properly and wearing the uniform properly. This picture screams “Look at me!!! a Native American first before I’m a soldier! Pathetic.

Well, in fact she WAS a native American first before becoming a soldier, and she is a Native American after being a soldier. I just don't see the issue. Do you expect someone to forever forego their cultural heritage because they chose to serve their country? The photo is obviously done to depict 2 different parts of her life; her life as a soldier, and her life as a Native American.

Love the photo. It's not disrespecting the uniform and lets be honest, once you have your DD214, everything's just a suggestion.

WOW!!!! If you served your COUNTRY wear the uniform proudly no matter what others feel I see a beautiful young lady who served her country and represented her clan and the NAVAJO nation with Honor and Respect. This picture tells a story of being proud being Navajo and the pride she has for serving her country.

Get on the people who cant provide proof of their Military Service

SGT Jeremiah B. HOOAH! " ... once you have your DD214, everything's just a suggestion." Show what you earned, show you served, show your love and pride for service and for our country. I have had many a great conversation with Vietnam Vets because they wear their uniforms (jungles, etc.) to Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day. Some with beards, some with pony tails, some with flat tops, and some no hair at all. Thanks for posting the sanity check!

Tell that to the guys being called back to active duty to face charges under the UCMJ years after they retired and received their DD-214’s

2LT Ronald Reimer - The problem with retirement is that your DD-214 is more like a "as things stand currently" document rather than an actual record of separation. Retirees are subject to indefinite recall and some, if not all, UCMJ actions. If you retired 10-15 years ago, you may still find yourself putting on a uniform when the next major conflict happens.

However, those of us that got out at the end of our (re)enlistment and "served" out any inactive time we had left are free and clear. I mean, I'm sure there's a way they could get me if I did something horrible while active duty, but it's a hell of a lot harder to do AFAIK.
