I don't even need to read the article. I am involved in mentoring, veterans projects, running and trail projects, and once a year or so for the last 20 work a spring and fall church dinner. I wonder sometimes where the time comes from but always seem to meet all my obligations. It is also nice when someone you have helped let's you know years later how it affected them

Alan K. - the church thing comes from my mom demandasking me. The others are because I was a wild kid with no directionand think I might be able to help a kid. Veterans stuff is because we owe them. Running- well I run a lot.

I spent decades volunteering in church as a teacher of pre-school children and as an usher since 1988 Lt Col Charlie Brown. I had to back off from teaching pre-school children once my heart disease advanced in the early 2000s. I have also volunteered at the polls since 1996 as a Republican precinct captain. I greet each person independent of their stance or politics.
God transformed me from a painfully shy person into somebody who reaches out to total strangers.
One benefit from volunteering was being exposed to various and sundry illnesses to build up my antibodies [after my own children had passed from those childhood stages :-)
