Hopefully they would learn a lot and carry it Through the rest of the war. They made a lot of progress in Military Medicine. Even before the War started if One person who could explain about how diseases such as Malaria, Typhus and Dysentery was spread it would have saved hundreds of thousands of lives. There were over 400,000 deaths attributed to just disease. Two out of every three.

Custer got himself into this by not listening to orders and not having proper recon. He backed the Natives into a corner where they had no way out except for to fight. As soon as he attacked his plan started falling apart. It was utter chaos. a type of fighting at which Natives excelled at. If I would have been there I would have hoped to be there as Custer's Senior to order him to stand down. If not I would have probably shot his ass. Anything other than get butchered with the 5 companies he led into a death trap. They died horrible deaths.

Ah, but was Custer the kind of man who would listen to such a talk? History paints him as a loose cannon.

You'd be more likely to succeed if you went and had a talk with Generals Crook or Terry and got them to put that arrogant fool in the stockade so he couldn't lead his men into that massacre. Nice sentiment though.
