“I am a Berliner” by Bill Bennett and John Cribb

On June 26, 1963, John F. Kennedy became the first president to stand on the west side of the Berlin Wall and denounce totalitarianism. Kennedy called the wall “the most obvious and vivid demonstration of the failures of the Communist system, for all the world to see.” With the words Ich bin ein Berliner (“I am a Berliner”), he assured Europeans of U.S. resolve to stand up for freedom.

There are many people in the world who really don’t understand, or say they don’t, what is the great issue between the free world and the Communist world. Let them come to Berlin. There are some who say that Communism is the wave of the future. Let them come to Berlin. . . .Freedom has many difficulties and democracy is not perfect, but we have never had to put a wall up to keep our people in, to prevent them from leaving us. . . . [The Berlin Wall is] an offense not only against history but an offense against humanity, separating families, dividing husbands and wives and brothers and sisters, and dividing a people who wish to be joined together. . . .

Freedom is indivisible, and when one man is enslaved, all are not free. When all are free, then we can look forward to that day when this city will be joined as one and this country and this great Continent of Europe in a peaceful and hopeful globe. When that day finally comes, as it will, the people of West Berlin can take sober satisfaction in the fact that they were in the front lines for almost two decades.

All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin, and, therefore, as a free man, I take pride in the words “Ich bin ein Berliner.”

Lt Col Charlie Brown: I served, defended and protected this great country of ours; during the Cold War. I know what it's like to be free. I think that all of us appreciate the heck out of our freedom.

Proponents of the wall on our southern border should read this, especially the offense against humanity part.

Walls can be an effective deterrent to illegal border crossings, just as they are an effective deterrent to unlimited entry of your house and property. I disagree with JFK in that a wall is not inherently anything but a wall. A tool is a tool, it has no intrinsic human personality trait. It is neither evil, nor good. How that tool is used is what determines it's effectiveness and reflects the traits of the person using them. It is not inherently evil to defend the interests of one group (legal residents) of people over another (illegal immigrants). We are a nation of laws and people who desire entry to our nation should follow the guidelines provided for legal entry. Just as no sane person would allow any and all people to move in to their domicile and start demanding goods and services that they are not entitled to. Locking my door and preventing unlimited access to my home and belongings as well as the health and welfare of my loved ones does not make me evil and uncaring.

Lt Col Charlie Brown It was a great day when that wall came down. Ronald Reagans words are still clear in my head.
"Mr. Gorbachev tear down this wall"

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen I don't quite understand. Are you saying a wall to keep out illegals, possibly Islamic terrorist, drug runners, a wall to protect us from a continual stream of people from South America and the rest of the world who choose to illegally ignore our laws of entry goes against Humanity? An uncle of mine had a ranch in Yuma Arizona along the border. He raised Brangus cattle and had extremely valuable breeding stock. The illegals coming out of Mexico cost him hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages done to his ranch and stolen cattle. This continues today all along our Southern border. What we have in place for security over many miles is nothing more than a barbed wire fence!! We need that wall!!
