Thank you, my friend SGT (Join to see) for reminding us that in the closing years of the 19th century John Philip Holland achieved a successful test run for the first modern submarine off Staten Island, submerging for 1 hour 40 minutes.

Connecticut's Submarine Cenutry - John P. Holland: Father of the Modern Submarine
"John P. Holland was an Irish Engineer who developed the first submarine to be formally commissioned by the U.S. Navy and the first Royal Navy submarine, the Holland 1. Ancient Order of the Hibernians Historian, Jim Gallagher, gives a presentation on Holland's life and career. The U.S. Navy film "No Deck to Strut Upon" is also featured in this program."
