Best Gun for Home Defense: Shotgun, AR-15, or Pistol?

Looks like the AR-15 is the overall best option, but having said that, I still like my S&W M&P Shield for home/personal defense...unless arcane laws open our borders to radical Islamists, then I'd choose the AR ...just saying...

S&W M&P .45 is a great choice.
Most comfortable is my S&W Model 28 Highway Patrolman I bought in 1973 and carried as a street officer in the 70's and early 80's. That piece feels like a natural extension of my arm after over 40 years, but in current times hard to lug around compared to the M&P. Still keep it untill I go and either bury it with me or let the 3 daughters that all learned to shoot with it fight over who gets it.
