Does the 101st do the same thing as infantry nowadays and are they in Afghanistan right now?

SPC Erich Guenther - I served there 2007-2009 in 4th BCT. My feet barely hit the ground and it was JRTC then Afghanistan, then PCS.

William Hay - what is it you think Airborne units do when they hit the DZ? They either secure an Airhead to land follow on units or they move to seize an objective. An infantry, cav, or armor unit conducts patrols. It's what ya do.

The parachute, Bradley, Stryker, or the helicopter is just how you get to the fight. Taking objectives, defending, patrolling, and generally finding, fixing, and destroying the enemy in close combat is the function.

My BCT did mounted and dismounted ground patrols and air assault/air mobile missions. I think we even did a gun raid. We had six provinces in RCEast with Currahees operating out of 50 FOBs and COPs spread over 28,000 square miles. Some had no ground contact. 17 were air only for resupply and moving people.

In the 82nd. 1970s our mission was simple, "Seek and Destroy." For my brother that was in the 101st. in Vietnam, he said, their mission was simple, "Seek and Destroy."
I don't know what it is now a days, but I guess Technology has a big play in the mission. Maybe it's, "Destroy and Seek." lol

Picture was in the desert for training, and getting acclimatized due to Israel was having problems, and the 82nd. with the 1st. Cav. was to respond to help them.
But nobody knew that. Shssss!
