One hundred years ago today, was the first day for the Battle of Belleau Wood. During this battle it is said the German fighters gave the nickname "Tuefel Hunden", and to this day we hold onto this as we call all marines Devildog. Semper Fi brothers!

Thank you for the excellent article. WWI reminds me of battles in the Civil War. The range of weapons became far superior to the tactics of maneuver. Some generals were so vexed by this problem they ordered attacking columns, like giant hammers to attack the defenders in the hopes of reaching the enemy with sufficient mass to beat the defenders. This tactic was an astronomical mistake as the opposing army massed the canon and rifle fires into the column.

We've had several Nom de Guerres over our history. Devil Dog is still one of my favorites. No matter how derogatory they were meant in the beginning, Jarhead for instance, we proudly claim them all.

Good share Leatherneck. I have it on screen for later. Already read where Gunny Janson and Gunner Hurlbert got some.
