How long does it take to transfer units in the USAR?

Hello all,
I am in the USAR, and I am currently transferring from my MI Detachment to a CA BN. I would like to know how long the process takes for the transfer to be finalized after submitting the DA4651 through my current unit?

Depends on the speed of the Commanders and the 1 Shops. I've seen the requests signed, approved and orders cut within 3 days (this actually happened with me). I've seen others take a month (also me).

It depends on the approval level. I had to pull teeth to transfer from RFX BDE Advisor to a non - deploying 1SG slot. And that was only after tidying up my section and gift wrapping out on a nice green bow for my new CO (Who was previously my section chief). There was some discussions WITH Senior NCOs and Sergeants Major before the final sign off at MACOM. Pushing hard, I got it done in 5 weeks.

SFC, what was the highest level your transfer had to have approval? I am active duty oconus and my husband is trying to transfer to a unit closer to me. However his unit is RFX and it has taken us 18 months, and his paperwork sent all the way to a general and it was still denied. Just wondering how we can expedite the process.

In my opinion, as long as you were not part of a ready force X unit, your transfer should only take a couple weeks.

Otherwise it could take half a year.
In order for me to leave my last RFX unit it took the signature of 1-LTC, 2-COL's and 1-BG to go from one TPU unit to another TPU unit for a primary vacancy unoccupied by another, and branch position I am MOQ'd for in a position of advancement and career diversity, and was 300 miles closer to home.
Be careful where you step in the USAR, you might not be able to get your foot out easily.

LTC (Join to see) - MARRS will have the RFX status of a UIC. Probably one of the most useful things I learned while in Command. Find the training NCO of the UIC you want to transfer to and ask them.
If one goes by this rule of thumb it will help you greatly:
Anything that could be useful as RFX is RFX or is going to be RFX. I would only go into an RFX unit if it just got off RFX status. Then chances are pretty decent you could get a full assignment term in before it goes RFX again when one tries to get out.
This is why I'm so confident 1LT/CPT's in the USAR can always get a command. You might not get an ideal cushy command, but there will always be an RFX Company a Battalion Commander is desperate to fill. Otherwise, half the Company Commanders wouldn't be LT's that don't have CCC out of the way.
