Greetings all,
I'm currently active duty navy with 9 years AFS. I am looking to separate from the Navy into the reserves, but had the grand idea of why don't I submit an interservice transfer packet into the Army Reserves/National Guard to be an aviator. Or, completely separate from the Navy and join the Army as a civilian...not preferred.
I suppose the jist of this question is, what are the chances the army would accept an interservice transfer request for someone to either go the Warrant Officer Flight or Commissioned Officer Aviator route or is that even a possibility? Also, what is this 6 year AFS cut off for OCS, I know the AFS Waiver is available for WOCS but is that a thing for OCS? Thanks in advance.

In order to submit such a request you would have to have a conditional release from the Navy signed already. I doubt the Navy has a program in place to release enlisted members early for other services, but maybe they do. The Army accepts inter service transfers for WOCS you can find the info on their recruiting page.

Attaining the DD368 is a challenge in the Navy. I suppose I’m curious as to whether or not if I were able to get one, would accession into the Army reserves be possible as a 153a/15a via Inter-Service transfer.

Unless it has recently changed, OCS from Active to reserves is the same as applying while active. You can choose if you want to be active/active reserves or reserves when you get accepted to an aviation program. If you separate and then go to an Officer Selection Officer to get into an aviation program as a prior service applicant, that is a different process, especially if you don't yet have a degree. Quotas can vary by recruiting station, it's substations, and even within a state. It's best to talk to all parties involved before you make a decision. Your question is a little more involved than just wanting to go straight into a WO helo pilot in the Army from active duty.

I was an AO2 and left the Navy after 4.5 years. I went back to school on the GI Bill and signed up for ROTC and the National Guard Simultaneous Membership Program. I'm not tracking an AFS waiver for OCS. My recommendation, depending on where you want to live, is to call a National Guard Officer Recruiter and Aviation unit in that state. Tell them your scenario. I would also talk to the State Aviation Office, or Training Officer in charge of scheduling/boarding Aviator Candidates. Go to flight school as a warrant. Build time as a warrant and get a Track school (Standardization, Maintenance, Safety or TACOPS) while you finish your degree as a traditional Guardsman (1 weekend / month - 2 weeks per year...which will really be that plus 1 - 2 months of additional training obligations). As a college student that is a great way to earn extra money and develop your profession. Once you finish your degree, and you've got your track, then go to OCS.

Someone gave me that advice when I got out, but I didn't understand it, so I just went to ROTC. I should have went warrant first.
