I am currently in the Army Reserves and I am always considering becoming a pilot as long as I can make it work with my active duty spouse. If I choose this route it seems like something I'd prefer to do full time. I am aware that I can send a packet in to the active duty side however a friend of mine, who is a recruiter, informed me that this path is a quite a bit more difficult and getting selected may be significantly harder. My chances of being selected in the reserves are quite high right now and I've been informed that there are plenty of slots. There is also the option of returning to active duty enlisted, then sending up a flight packet. This also could take a bit more time. I just want weigh my options here and see if any of you have heard of transitioning from Reserves to Active duty in flight school. I appreciate any responses.

Yes it can be a little challenging because you don't have the resources available to you as active duty does, but definitely do-able.

This is the route I took and made selection in January.

Just keep your head and don't give up d/t the amount of road blocks that you will encounter.

And feel free to reach out to me if you need any help or have questions.

Did you send up a packet with an active duty recruiter? Or did you go active and then submit a packet?

WO1 Jacob Wellman I worked with an active duty recruiter to develop the packet. But being in USAR, you have to submit the packet directly to the board just like active duty folks. Your DA368 (cannot go to board without it) conditional release is what gets you released from USAR after you get selected and the recruiter takes you to MEPS to enlist into Active duty.
After this you belong to USAR until ship date to WOCS (which is your start date of active duty and ETS from USAR)

Not yet sir. I still need to go over it with my wife. But that's a path I have considered. I know there is a program called Call to Active Duty for Commissioned Officers and Warrants but I am unsure if it is still being used.
