The downside I can see is that reality is never like the video games. Murphy exists in real life. It if can go wrong, it will. Sure, code can be written in to account for this in a game, but there's still nothing like reality.

This pretty clearly is not meant to substitute reality. That's explicitly stated, the idea is to try ideas virtually before money is dumped in to the project.
Imagine if they had done that with the F-35. Billions could have been saved.

SGT Sean Goodrow shhhh. You're speaking of the unspeakable when you bring up the money pit that has been the F-35. You're very right, though. They probably would've realized very early on that they couldn't just cram every little toy into each variant if they had tried it virtually first. It only took them 10 years to realize it in physical form.
