RP Active Duty Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines Corps, Coast Guard, (Air & Army) National Guard, and Reserve Members check out this great opportunity to earn $125 in Gift Cards to join a study funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. This study could help a lot of service members going forward in the future. Check out the link below - ask Cindy Umanzor questions!

Well I'm not Active Duty, but to answer your question on "What would make me consider participating in a Health and Wellbeing Study", I would have to say if there wasn't any stigma attached to it. We all know mental health carries a stigma and personally I think it's worse for military members because we are always trying to be stronger than we are. I think a person like me would be encouraged to participate if it were either A.) completely anonymous or B.) a Command Sponsored/Sanctioned study. My reasoning is this... as a military member, even if I thought there was something wrong with me, I likely won't seek out help unless I know no one else will find out about it. Secondly, if this was something that was met with Command Approval, then chances are I'm not going to argue against it. Some might even rush to sign up if they think they'll get time off work to do the study. Things that would deter me as previously mentioned include the stigma attached to mental health issues, the thought of people looking down on me because of weakness, even the Service thinking I'm mentally unfit to continue service.

Thanks for the comment. Those are all important issues. We were hoping to get approval to go through a command but the timing didn't work out and it was suggested to go through the social route to avoid delays which is really hard because of your reasons. This program is different it's an app designed with gaming principles. It's like an obstacle course. Each week users receive an activity tailored to their stage of change. We appreciate your honest response.

Cindy Umanzor - If it's app-based, then that might be easier to get people interested. It's hard to find a person these days without a phone attached to them. Even with it being app-based though, I think a certain level of anonymity might be required for fear of reprisal. If your app asked questions such as "Have you taken a prescription medication that you weren't prescribed" or "Have you ever mixed alcoholic beverages with any form of medication", I'm fairly confident you wouldn't get an honest answer from anyone on Active Duty. The paranoia of it being leaked to their command could skew the answers.

Cpl Justin Goolsby Yes, I have heard the concern about honesty regarding risky behavior. That's definitely the tough part. But we hope folks still sign up to at least learn more about improving other behaviors like stress management, financial well-being, social support, tobacco cessation, healthy sleep habits etc.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs Not at all. Please share widely! We still need 810 participants to complete recruitment. And FYI, things are looking good for receiving funding for the Veteran's pain management study. I'll keep you posted on that.
