We used to have Balakatan In PI... Foul Eagle in ROK... and Cobra Gold In Thailand and all concentrated on the Possibility of Conflicts In The Entire Region

We did - but the effort in other than Korea was never Division level focus.... since the two exercises in Korea took up that resource as well as CORPS level. But we also did not apply any focus on assaulting small islands before... nor the like items - with our regional partners. This folds in well with the Pacific Pathways as being the build up and train up in that coordination and working together..

I think the Philippines is a NO GO as her president wants our military relationship based on counterinsurgency, humanitarian aid, and disaster relief. I am glad we are conducting a large scale exercise for a show of force mission and to learn from it. It really pisses me off that some of our "allies" are being seduced by the Belt and Road Initiative. I will use the Philippines as an example. They invited Chinese military intrusion. Australia has leased Port Darwin for 99 years. They are facilitating the Chinese enlarging footprint.

Maybe and maybe not depending if you are looking at short term and or longer term. There are other places to do this than the PI... and the ability to be flexible enough to work in the region with other partners and allies is a long term key item. Its just as much a factor that you can get neighbors to train together as we get to train with all them.... and when you do it above a BDE level - that means staffs as well as tactical training. The problem before was it was all NE Asia focused on our funding. Long term wise - getting the Japanese and the ROKs into this training event will be likely.... as well as ANZUS. As for Oz.. I think they are turning the corner... which happens when you figure out how far the PRC has advanced in your country..... and they have.

LTC Eric Udouj - My contention is the larger the Chinese footprint, the harder for us to conduct show of force missions and to defend various countries in Asia. I do believe that ROK and Japan are weary of the Chinese threat and will act accordingly.
