86th IBCT (MYN) was under 10th MTN (LI) at the beginning of the Associated Units Pilot. At the end of the initial pilot 86th IBCT (MTN) was reassigned as an independent brigade, to allow the 3rd Brigade to realign with 10th MTN (LI) as it was determined that a NG division (with most of its staff in an M-Day status) was not well equipped to have a full time active duty element beneath them.

But wait, there’s more! This explains the ARNG Division/Brigade relationship for roughly the last 15 years. This should provide you with a little more clarity on organic vs aligned. NOTE: The ARNG is now moving to restructure to make BCTs organic to eight divisions. https://www.ausa.org/sites/default/files/TBSR-2005-ARNG-Division-and-Brigade-Combat-Team-Designations.pdf
