I'm looking to put together a unit function to introduce soldiers in my unit to the public transportation system in South Korea, both as a practical skill and a morale-boosting event. So far I have a loose CONOP for a day trip to Seoul from Humpreys to see the Seoul Tower. Does anybody else have suggestions for interesting / culturally significant destinations for a day trip?

Depends on how much time you have. Seoul Tower is a fun 1-2 hour experience, but I don't see you guys spending more than that there. The War Memorial/Museum is just across the street north of Yongsan and the National Museum is just outside gate 13 (and the Icheon subways top on line 4) by the hospital. There are 3 palace complexes just north of Seoul Tower (downtown) that are very interesting to see. It's a bit of a walk so bus or subway is the best option. Also the shopping areas of Insadong, Meyongdong and Namdaemun are close by. The Cheonggyechong river walk downtown is cool to see. And if you go during Buddha's birthday coming up, it will be filled with paper laterns.

And that is all North Seoul. There are a bunch of cool things south of the Han in Gangnam and Apgujeong areas such as the '88 Olympic site, pro baseball games (Go Doosan Bears!), Lotte World, COEX mall, Apgujeong Rodeo, etc.

Korea's National Military Cemetery is also just south of Yongsan across the river. It is their version of Arlington.

LTC Paul Labrador - All of these are very good points, and great things to look forward to. The plan is to be an all-day experience (from lunch to about 1900) with the tower being only part of it, the "main attraction" if you will. For the rest of it, small groups will be free to move about the area and explore, as long as they meet up at predetermined points and times.

SGT (Join to see) - too bad I'm not stationed in Yongsan anymore. I would have loved to shown your troopies around.

I had an amazing time when I was there, and I wanted to share that experience with my fellow troopers. One of the scariest things I did was try to navigate the subways on my own, as I'd never used them before. After I got used to it, it was a very simple process to go from point A to B without fear of getting lost.

SGT (Join to see) - Once you learn to read a little Hangul, taking the bus is pretty easy too.

The Inchon landing site and memorial museum are an excellent location to visit and perfect for one day. Meets all the requirements you specified.
