I'd say Track and Field as well as Cross Country. I know many people who can't even run a mile. So this will help get them used to long distances and the sprinting events will help develop speed. Then there's the throwing events which will help upper body strength.

We didn't hang around to on a wrestling team. The football team was fair to middling. Personally, I gained tremendously from that year of football.

When you play both O & D as we did in 1950, even 17 yo kids wear out. I always note major universities having so much depth of personnel, that the small schools on their schedules do not have a chance.
