What are your thoughts on baggers at the commissary? Still necessary today with smaller families?

In the past people had more children and when husbands deployed it would be difficult for a spouse to shop, take care of children, and lug a cart or two of groceries to the car. Today, families are smaller and a lot of spouses are male, not to mention women are perfectly capable of loading their own cars with groceries. I find it odd that I pay a 70 year old man or woman to load my car when I'm 30 years younger and more fit. Not to mention it adds another expense.

You're not obligated to pay and as my teenagers have told me, not everyone tips. Additionally, you are welcome to bag you own groceries, you need only tell the bagger; plenty of other consumers in the store to assist.

It is a service that is available for you, it is not mandatory to use this service. There are still plenty of service members and their family members who use and appreciate the assistance.

It's a decent amount of cash for a lot of people who need it, another opportunity to help your neighbor. Why mess with something that is working fine?

That's the thing, is it working fine? I find myself avoiding the commissary because of them. I feel obliged to tip them even if I run in for a few items. And then where is the savings after the fee and tipping the bagger for 15 dollars of groceries. Plus they one bagger bag them and another take them to the car. It ends up costing me five or six bucks.

MSgt (Join to see) - They have self checkout lines at our commissary, so that means baggers are easy to bypass if your just getting a few items. I don't like self-checkout though, and usually go through the regular lines. If it's just a couple pastic bags worth of stuff, I'll put a dollar in the little plastic cup and carry my stuff to the car. We do a big shop at the commissary once a month, usually spend over $300 (mostly meats and cheeses), however if we had bought the same stuff off post it would cost over $400. I don't mind tipping 6 or 7 bucks in those cases.
