Do we need a new camouflage pattern uniform? Is there a crying need to get it out to troops?

Yes, the UCP is a bust. We know that. But we already issue OCP uniforms to those deploying to Afghanistan. That model could be continued. and while UCP is not great cammo, the uniform does its job of identifying the wearer as a member of the US Army, and providing protection and modesty to the body wearing it.

In an age when we are pink-slipping officers in the field, contemplating massive drawdowns, and are unable to fully equip formations, why is this uniform change a priority for the dollars that we have left?

Used to be we simply wore the BDUs and that was it unless getting deployed to a desert environment where we were issued the DCUs. The SPECOPS community needed more reliable camo for look feel and concealment and started their own trend which bled into everything else until the Marines came up with MARPAT but wouldn't play nice with everyone else. DoD should have nipped in the bud back then. I completely agree there is no money for trying and failing camo uniforms and patterns seemingly on a whim at this time.

I guess since this new uniform was approved and will be required to worn next year by Fall, does that mean the the "one uniform for all branches" act that the DoD wanted to be pushed last year by 2018 was rejected? I can't find any follow up on that. Oh, well, the OCP does look better than the UCP ACUs!

https://beta.congress.gov/bill/113th-congress/house-bill/1960?q={%22search%22%3A[%22HR+1960%22]}

It's passed the House and the Senate is sitting on it.

It contains a provision that requires the SecDef to recommend a single camouflage pattern by October 2018.
