Signed a Three Year National Guard contract prior to leaving active duty, but didn't anticipate landing a great job that requires travel; I have to request split drills often, which has not been an issue, but I'm wondering if I can go IRR for these last two years so that a Soldier who is able to show up to drill every month can serve the unit better. Other concern is bonus recoupment...advice?

As a former UA for the Reserves and I think the answer will be the same for Guard, No, you must be in a TPU status to be eligible for Tricare. You can call them to make sure, but I am 98% sure it is No.

I am 100% sure it is no, as when I went IRR on 1 Jan 2016, I got dropped and could not reapply until I came out of the IRR on 2 Aug 2016.

SGT (Join to see) - has he actually seen the order placing him in the IRR or did he just submit his packet and his unit told him he was good to go? My guess would be that the order wasn't cut yet, or at minimum didn't get processed, or there may be some glitch between SIDPERS and DEERS that caused the information to fail to transfer correctly. Either way, he shouldn't expect to keep it much longer as he is no longer eligible.

1SG (Join to see) Unsure at this point but he did say earlier today that it is very possible that his unit did not process the request but told him he was good to go.

SGT (Join to see) - ha! It's almost as if I've been around a while and seen things happen a time or two.

no, you will not be eligible for TRS if you go into the IRR. Also, you will lose your bonus and may face recoupment. You just need to read your specific contract to see the details.

Yeah, I'm gonna dive into my contract and check it out some more. I already received my bonus in full, but the recoupment piece may be showstopper. The only thing that could make recoupment a non-issue is that my unit changed my UIC because my original UIC went to Kosovo and I didn't....I'll check into it. Thanks.
