SFC (Join to see) - it is possible to live off post if you are stationed on Kadena.

1) If you are single or unaccompanied, SSGs are authorized to live off-post based on high occupancy of barracks.

2) If you are married and accompanied, it will be based on the availability of quarters. If they are available, then, yes, you will live on one of the base housing areas. If the occupancy rate is high enough or if quarters are not available, then you will be authorized to live off base as an exception to policy.

It just makes sense, as it is very expensive for the military to cover the cost of rent/utilities/etc for folks to live off base if there is on base housing available.

That’s unfortunate, I was looking forward to living off post. I hope they have on post housing that is capable to accommodate a family of seven, two adults and five kids.

Hopefully you have a sponsor who can help you out with the specifics. I have seen special cases where housing accommodated large families by joining two units together. It would be cheaper for you and housing to stay on base due to the rent cap.

I was there until 2010. Haven't heard of such mandate. I did hear about certain percentage of on post housing must be filled before authorizing members to move off base. You should find online Kadena AFB housing contact information and get a hold of them directly for the latest and greatest up to date info. It's a nice housing, don't get me wrong! Just a bit noisy during weekdays when F15, 18, and AWACS circle overhead
