My father and grandfather both served in the military. They always enjoy telling stories about their experiences at boot camp, things have obviously changed since their time in the service, but some recent veterans claim that recruiting videos for the Navy and Army are softened up to comfort families of the recruit. So I ask how actual boot camp compared to the the recruitment videos?

Boot camp will wake you the fuck up. It will destroy your entitlement. (I'm speaking to the collective you, not YOU you). It will teach you to be a part of a team, to consider things bigger than yourself. It will make you realize that you have the potential to be more than you think you can be. That said, it's not torture. Hard? Maybe. Any reasonable high school athlete is going to be fine for the physical stuff. Then it's simply a matter of your mental strength and fortitude, and attention to detail. Millions have gone through it and come out unscathed. You can, too, if you want it.

Recruitment videos are ALWAYS softened up to get you to feel more relaxed. They show you all the fun stuff you will be doing. To put it this way.....when a movie gets shown on regular television.......like a horror movie.......there is always a disclaimer that the movie is edited for time and content. They are cutting out the bad stuff. Trust me, while Basic Training may be getting easier...........having cell phones still boggles my brain............it still is no cake walk in the sunshine.

SPC (Join to see) - I got to call home 3 times during basic. And all three times were collect calls. Cell phones back then were still the massive old bricks you see in museums.....but even then.......HELLS NO would the Drill Sergeants have allowed those things. We had to earn the opportunity to make that collect call.

We had guys lose their right to there call home, we had guys ruin it for the entire platoon. Hell I remember Blue Phase we had completed everything, all that was left was to Graduate and go home or off to AIT whichever you were off to next. The Drill Sergeant by some act of mercy had allowed us to have it for 3 hours while he was off doing whatever it was he did on Sundays.

Our orders were to get get out of uniform and into PT's once you were done with Church, if you were going to Church. Not going to Church got you an extra hour with your phone. Everyone was excited, never had we been allowed something that seemed so luxurious to us at the time.

Our DS said he wanted us to get family issues, travel arrangements, etc squared away, and any issues reported to him ASAP as Family Day was approaching and he didn't want everyone using the phone in the office/class room. Two dumb fucks refused to change into PTs. DS walks in not even 15 minutes had gone by with the phones and just like that all gone.

Never had I seen so much hate towards 2 people.

SPC (Join to see) - Stuff like this......don't even let them see the light of day until they are officially graduated and gone from their basic company

MSG (Join to see) - I'd be fine with it, can't say I didn't enjoy the moments before they were ripped away by idiocy but that's not the point of basic. It's supposed to be secluded, just training and not distractions.
