The term "challenge" hardly even applies when it comes to Army coins. Majority of the time they're just a commemorative unit based coin for an on the spot recognition or presented with an award. How often are you likely to be in a bar, someone yells out about the challenge coin, and you're likely to have one that outranks theirs so you don't have to buy the round? I've received a few cool looking ones, and the ones that mean the most are from the commanders I served that I respected and were great leaders. They're given out so much they are often a token of appreciation for when they don't want to go through the effort of writing up an award to process, and it doesn't go on your record. If you didn't get a coin for things you did in the military, then I'd guess it is because there was no coin to be given. Was it a unique thing you did and you felt slighted people got coins for doing less? Or was it something that someone else in your unit at the same time was recognized by a coin and you weren't? If it was 2 people in different units that did the same thing and one got a coin and the other didn't, then they had different people judging their merit, or choosing to award it, or one unit just didn't give out coins. I've seen some commanders that give out a few coins a year at ceremonies for recognition and I've seen other commanders that gave them out like candy so they were pretty meaningless.

There are many sites that offer challenge coins and many will also do custom challenge coins, take a look at "Challenge Coins 4 U" if you are interested in having custom challenge coins done for you.
