CSMR is California's State Defense Force. We are title 32 service members just like National Guard service members operating within their home state. We are largely volunteer but we can bid full time paid AGR jobs and we do get paid when we go on ESAD.

I believe they are California's State Defense Force or Militia. Most people think of the National Guard as the State Militias and they're not really wrong but each State is allowed to have their own Militia that can not be Federalized like the National Guard can be. California is one of I think 20 States that does have its own Militia, in this case I believe both Land and Sea.

They wear the same uniform, though instead of U.S. Army it will say California on their uniform. They are subject to the orders of their Governor and may be called upon in times of disaster, etc

They are a reserve force of the state of California: http://csmrsoldier.com/ depending on the unit. I have seen them run ranges, process soldiers for deployments, teach classes, They dedicate their time, don't get paid, and work pretty hard, out of love for country and the soldier experience.
