Next week, a Houston Veterans Service Organization (VSO) is hosting a major fundraiser. They will raise a large amount of money from this event since former Secretary of Defense, Dr. Gates is the keynote speaker. I love attending such events to hear amazing speakers, network with others, and take veterans to inspire them. However...this organization has serious allegations against it and from trusted sources. One of them is a long time friend who is a West Point graduate. I just got off the phone with him and he says to stay away. I will heed his counsel and I'm curious of what makes a bad VSO to you? (Please base your response on either facts that you have researched or from personal accounts. No hearsay...)

If this VSO is on the VA-approved list I can't seem to find it. That might be the first indicator right there. The VA does have a method of being added to the VA list and I would expect a VSO that cares about helping Vets and is concerned with longevity would take that step.
IMO, a "good" VSO is one that takes care of Vets in a responsible way. If they're spending their money where they shouldn't be, that's a problem. If they're turning away Vets when they don't have to, that's a problem.
I suppose it really comes down to the opinion of the Vets being treated/assisted by that VSO. Are they happy? Are they not?
