Is it appropriate to use the term "Battle" when referring to leaders?

I used the term "Battle" frequently with my fellow Drill Sergeants and a few other NCOs; It was short for battle buddy. It was used as a show of respect between leaders. We were in the circle, training, fight, "battle", or whatever together. My battle had my back and I had his, we were essentially saying we count on each other. NEVER, would I call anybody a Battle I didn't respect and carry the upmost regard for

SFC Michael Jackson,
In BCT was the only time I heard the term, and only used by the Drill Sergeants.

I would have to disagree with using anything other than the military rank structure. Call NCOs Sergeant, Officers by their rank (not LT), and so on. To use other terms implies a special familiarity with that individual not shared by others - such as a SSG calling the 1SG 'Top'. Pretty soon you have Privates doing the same.

Battle, Warrior and hero are overused, they all have their place, when I am telling my soldiers not to leave the area alone, I tell them to take a battle buddy, a warrior to me is someone that fought till death, a hero is the warrior that is now dead!

SSG (Join to see) - I spent many years at sea...never used "mate". "Shipmate"? Yes, occasionally. Rate specific nicknames such as "boats"(Boatswains Mate"), "Guns"(Gunners Mate) etc... more often than anything.
