So why do middle grade (and above) officers avoid social media?

I've been very involved in social media, especially related to Veteran / Military service groups. I was only a LT, USN, when I "Got out" but it's interesting why senior officers haven't embraced the "crowd-souce" technology." Let's be honest. Sometimes you hated your boss, sometimes you loved him/her as a leader. Truth be told, they made a difference in your life, and as you "grow up" you could benefit from the interaction with them.

<--- Not afraid to use Social Media, just have to use it properly and remember that we are still Soldiers (Marines, Airmen, Sailors, etc) while engaging each other here.

Agreed, Colonel. Many mid-to-seniors probably don't want to scrap with folks who don't carry the decorum with them after separating or completing their either enlistment or "Time in service." This forum isn't about "Beer-drinking and Party-Going" like maybe FaceBook or other Social Media Sites are about. Many great responses to questions here are very insightful, well-thought-through, and respectful of others' views even if you disagree. We should respect if we expect respect, regardless of number of years served or "Former Rank..." (Golden Rule) Thank you.

I have recently in the past year started using Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter, and Rallypoint...I find them to be outstanding tools and enjoy very much the information I gather from them all. In my opinion, the reason senior officers do not use social media as much is because they come from a generation that did not use computers as much or at all. When I joined the Air Force in the 80s, we did not use computers nor did we have personal email accounts, etc. It was not until I was a mid-level Captain that I final had my own computer on my desk and was assigned my own work email account. Computer technology has come a very long way in just the past 20-years. Bottom Line: I think it is just the comfort level between the younger and older generations when it comes to using social media.

I've made on LinkedIn and FaceBook have been "Closed / Secret Groups" Which mimic the "You have to be verified..." meme of RallyPoint.

Even though I am not in the middle range for officers, I love using social media (correctly) and will continue to use it throughout my career (8+ yrs left). As long as you use social media correctly, there is no need to worry about it.
In this day in age, it would behoove you to not use social media, as everything is posted on the internet now a days and a lot of these social medias offer all this information at one location.
