So I’m getting medboarded and I’ve already signed off on the PEB and MEB parts. I met with my peblo a couple weeks ago and he told me to go to the transition office to find out what they needed from me. I go there and get the checklist of different paperwork needed to continue the process. Well, when I get there, they tell me the paperwork I need and tell me that once I turn in the paperwork back to them, then I can get my actual hard orders (they already gave me my hard date) and after I get my hard orders I can then go to CIF to turn in all my gear. Well, I go back yesterday to transition and they look through my stuff and tell me that my transaction record should be stamped saying I have a zero balance from CIF and that I should’ve turned in my gear by now, they also tell me that my DA-31 leave form is incorrect (My hard date is January 31st and I’m using 31 days of my leave to go on transition leave from January 1st-January 31st) they said that I can’t take terminal/transition leave if I’m being medboarded. She said that I need to go to CIF and get my transaction record stamped and call back to her and she will tell me the dates I can take my leave, because apparently after I turn this paperwork in, my hard orders will take about 15 days to come in and that’s why they tell people to take their leave on the 16th day after you turn in your paperwork. She said I needed to use my leave days, but I couldn’t take them where my final leave day is the day I’ll be out of the army, so basically I’d have to take them in December and then come back for most of January and be sitting here until the 31st. So my question is, how come I’ve known numerous people going through this same process who have taken transition leave? Also, what if you’re trying to take transition leave so you can find a job/find a house before your pay is cutoff? Am I supposed to leave here the day I get out and just hope I can find a job 2,000 miles away before I run out of money? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I may be rusty at this from my cadre days at a WTB in Alaska. Yes, you can take terminal leave but it would end on the date DA (or whoever cuts your orders) has set for your separation from service. If you have too much leave the Army will sell it for you). If you are living overseas you can request permissive TDY in conjunction with your terminal leave. This adds time for you which is intended to help you with house hunting and job hunting.

Taking terminal leave when going through a medical board versus taking terminal leave because of regular retirement have diferent rules on how you take your leave. I don't remember all the ins and out.

I do remember when I went through my own med board that I needed to use as much as I could to avoid selling it at the end. I got to say and retired 5 years later.

Unfortunately, as I saw in many of our soldiers in WTB, they may have to sell some of the leave on their way out. And they have little control on taking leave beyond the last day of service.

Just to be clear, terminal leave, or transition leave, it is all leave that you earned. Permissive TDY is non chargable leave.

I’ll ask around and try to figure out something. I may just take my leave during Christmas block leave. Thank you for the help.

I went through an MEB, sold my leave, took some leave. Nothing like the jumping hoops you are going through. I wish I could give you some advice.

I’m going to ask around and might just go ahead and take Christmas block leave and just tough it out another month.

SPC (Join to see) - If I remember properly. Finance told me I could take X amount of days for leave, and the remainder I had to sell after my MEB.

Only time I have seen terminal leave granted in conjunction with MEDSEP is when there was a requirement for continued treatment and that treatment was transferred to the VA at the home of record.
