My first thought was that this sounds about right. From what I've read and heard, I assume he did desert his post.

My second thought was that in our great country, he will be able to defend himself and try to beat the rap.

And my third thought was a question: I wonder if his defense will be post traumatic stress made him do it? And will that work?

valid points CW5, especially No. 3.  it seems to be the "fall back" defense these days.

This poses another question, if the Coast Guard found him mentally unfit, why would the Army take him, put him through basic, train him in our tactics and strategy?

Attached is a second source to back up the link in topic description. I'm glad this is happening as I feared that politics would get in the way of justice. IMO the man is a traitor and I'm happy to see that he might finally get what's coming to him.

Desertion is really not enough. I think treason would be more appropriate. He clearly had feelings for the enemy and made those pretty known to others in his unit. He appeared to have some sympathy for the enemy, enough that he left and went to them pretty directly. While I have not read official reports, it is likely he provided helpful information to the enemy in regard to troop movements, strength, technics, tactics etc. His actions caused other Americans to die over the course of searching for him. Desertion, in my opinion, is far too light of a charge.

SGT (Join to see) .. It would be a surprise coming from the POTUS. Sorry to say he hasn't shown me much when it comes to honor. Hopefully I'm wrong this time.

SSG Jim Foreman, you're probably right but I like to try and give people the benefit of the doubt as often as possible. I must admit that there are a lot of politics involved with this that will be difficult for President Obama to maneuver around.

The thing is, I'm all for taking care of our own. I feel very strongly about never leaving anyone behind, even soldiers like Bergdahl. My problem lies in our negotiating with terrorists and how he was hailed as a returning hero. He's anything but, and the way that President Obama sold this story to the public was either deceitful or ignorant, and for a man who's President of the United States either option is terrible for their own reasons.

SGT Kenneth Robertson, I completely agree with never leaving a man behind. But.... with that I am talking about a troop who is wounded, a POW, or the body of our fallen brother or sister. I don’t think anyone who believes in this was referring to someone who left on their own. A person who has turned their back and loyalty on America doesn’t deserve a thing from us.. I think this is where the POTUS and/or his staff screwed up.
