Should Family Members/High School Students Visit Military Prisons as part of their Education?

Not long ago in Europe, we'd take groups of teenagers, usually Scouts, to visit Mannheim Prison. It was a sobering experience for all. We'd of course offset with other more positive experiences all over Europe. We never had a problem with any teen who visited the prison...but we have no statistics for later in life.

I think there is value in the Scared Straight approach, to be honest, I believe it may be of value to apply to the Junior Enlisted. Hearing the sound of doors closing solemnly while armed guards escort you through the Brig would provide a sobering reality.

Capt Porter--yes, I certainly would. One hears about consequences such as prison, but one rarely gets past the Hollywood image. Military Prisons were far more spartan than we imagined, prisoners had to turn their backs when we entered, unworthy of our respect. No conversations in the cells. Totally open cells, guards and cameras, zero privacy. Inventory of all cutlery before and after meals.
