The AK-12 is a fifth generation AK-pattern rifle, featuring several ergonomic improvements, a bolt catch, accessory rails, and a telescopic buttstock. The AK-12 is also has a lower recoil impulse than the AK-74M. Design work on the AK-12 began in August 2011 with the first prototype unveiled on 24 January 2012. The rifle is fed from 30 round AK-74 box magazines, but 60 and 95 rounds magazines are also available.

The 7.62 mm chambered AK-103-4 is the newest revision of the AK-47. It is also equipped with a Picatinny rail, telescopic folding buttstock and effective muzzle device.

The AK-12 is set to be used by only the elite Russian units equipped with Ratnik system. The remainder of the Army is expected to use an upgraded AK-74M, developed by Kalashnikov under military requirements and was shown for the first time at the Oboronexpo fair in August 2014.

I really don't see a huge difference with this. The top is milled as one piece to cover the whole top. It should be it able to receive optics better. It will also elongate the distance between the sights. So it should be more accurate in theory, merely by having a better sighting system. But my concern with this is that they are altering the operation of the weapon. By adding a bolt catch and changing the upper it may alter operations. It could be putting stress in areas of the rifle that were never exposed to stress before. By doing this you could be shortening the life of the weapon system. This is the same as turning a 9mm platform into a 45. It was not intended to handle the additional stresses of the larger caliber. It will work and operate fine but not for long.

That is true. The only think that is revolutionary is the bolt catch. That is barely catching up to what we have. The AK in nature is a very crude design. It was not really made to be fancy as they are now trying to do with it. It is simple and effective but there are better weapons out there. LTC Paul Labrador I am sure you are right about the trigger. I read about it and the pieces for the new weapon are interchangeable with the old weapon. So the pretty much says that it really is only cosmetic as you say.

IIRC Israeli Galil rifles (essentially a modified AK) had bolt catches.

LTC Paul Labrador The Galil is awesome rifle. As you can see that Russian is reinventing features that have been around for some time now. I wouldn't mind getting a TAR-21

I don't like bullpups. I've held Tavors. Didn't like the way they felt.
