So according to TRADOC Regulation 350-18 their are certain prerequisites that you have to meet IOT be eligible to attend school which has always been the case since I have been in the Army. Things like having a current APFT, being in compliance with 600-9, having at least a year left on your contract by time you graduate...and so on. I have now been an instructor for Soldiers wishing to reclass to another MOS for over two years and I think it is absolutely ridiculous that Soldiers in the reserves that are reclassing do not have the same standards as all other Soldiers due to the fact that the Army Reserves are once again trying to boost their numbers. The school that I teach in allows you to be overweight, flagged, ready to ETS, their is no APFT that has to be taken and just about any other reasons you can think of for not sending someone to school, it's pretty much okay! This is not something that I have made up I constantly get told to retain Soldiers who do not meet the standard. I would also like you to look up operation full court press, it's an order to bring back Soldiers that were dropped from rolls or chaptered for failing to comply with 600-9 and making them exempt from the standards for up to a year all in an effort to better our numbers. I find this to be such a DOUBLE STANDARD and it saddens me to know that I have to send these Soldiers on to some of your units. I am sorry in advance. Please let me know what you think and please read chapter 3 of TRADOC 350-18 you might be surprised by what you find.

That APFT and height/weight double standard does bother me, SFC (Join to see). I remember some borderline Soldiers and Warrant Officers who didn't make it on the entry APFT at certain professional development schools. They were sent home and that was not a good thing. Not good at all. We know the standards, but even in the active force we seem to slip into a state of lethargy. Arriving at some of those schools (even the top Warrant Officer schools - the Warrant Officer Staff Course and the Warrant Officer Senior Staff Course), if you could not pass the APFT or make height/weight, you got sent home. That was my experience on active duty, and I think that's about right. The standards are not a surprise to anyone.

What would I do as a member of the cadre? I'd lobby (professionally and tactfully) for adherence to the Army standards.

I really appreciate the advice CW5 Scott Montgomery. Just so you know that I haven't sat on my hands, I have brought the horrible issues to the Proponent level CSM and got a pat on the back for enforcing the standard but am being told that I chose to fight a losing battle.

As an AIT PLT SGT I see this all the time. But these are new Soldiers to the Army. They are not required to fall under 600-9 yet so they get away with that. The actually testing goes fairly well as after the 5th test failure they get reclassed or chaptered. EOC is amust though unless a waiver is somehow obtained.

I thought the One Army School System was supposed to fix all of this.

You are not going to fix something when you have different leaders over different schools doing different things with different leadership traits. It would be great if everyone is on the same sheet of music.
