In today's society, only 1% of people take the step towards becoming a soldier. I've met people from all walks of life who joined the military for different reasons. Some joined because of family lineage, some for the thrill; some joined for pride, others for the love of their country.

For me, I joined for a better future for my family. One with stability, a reason for my kids to be proud of me, and honestly, for insurance. I've always felt led to join out of service to my country as I feel all able-bodied people should, but my family would have to be the number one reason.

How about you all? Why'd you join? Is there a reason you selected the branch you did?

I have written this before ... My drive to take the oath was that it was the best option for a poor kid from upstate New York. I loved my country, but my real love of country came after I joined up. I felt I had two viable options: Work at the local mill or join the military. Because of finances, college seemed out of reach. I chose door #2, joined the DEP halfway through my Senior year in high school, and the rest is history. I am SOOO glad I took that oath!

I wanted training in the medical field-- my uncles that retired from the Navy, so it seemed natural to go there too. Besides- I wanted to get out on my own, and the Navy was a great way to start out my life
