I'm in the selection process for a veterinarian officer position (64A) and, if selected, I would be eligible for the Active Duty Health Professions Loan Repayment Program. I know the program says you get $40k per year for three years. Does the Army just give you $40k (minus tax) at the beginning of the fiscal year or whatever? Or is the repayment split up over your paychecks? Quarterly? How does it work? Thanks.

You have to provide your loan accounts and complete the forms on my pay each year for the government to pay the amounts (minus taxes) directly to your student loan accounts. When you log into my pay the links are there. Also when you commission through AMEDD they will give you guidance on what you do each year to get things squared away for loan repayments.

OK, I will double check before I consolidate then. I'm not familiar with the APMC acronym. I graduated vet school in May 2019 and have been applying for direct commission since October 2018 while I was a fourth year clinical student. My application went to the Veterinary Corps board a couple weeks ago and now I'm just waiting on a medical waiver for an official offer of commission.

APMC = AMEDD Professional Management Command
I am not sure if veterinarians are attached to this group or not. Basically the simplistic way to describe it is you belong to apmc based out of Georgia. They assist with all processing of pay and benefits, trainings, etc. and you can drill with a local unit for drill points and pay. Only certain specialities can be attached to apmc and you have you be so many miles from a drilling unit with your AOC.
I brought it up because they have a person who just handles student loan repayment that you can contact.
When you do get your commission and get assigned to your unit then you would want to find out who your S1 is (personnel shop) and reach out to them and they can either walk you through the process or get you to someone who knows it. James Stroup

Oh, interesting. No one has mentioned that to me before. Is APMC for reserves or active? I'm working with AMEDD recruiters in Illinois because that's where I did my veterinary training. If I get my commission, I will definitely ask around to sort out the best way to handle my loans and payments. I just wanted to be able to plan ahead somewhat with Health Professions Loan Repayment Program. I really appreciate the help!
