I was looking over photos that I took when I went to Arlington and was curious how many active and Veterans have taken the time to visit.

I live outside DC so have been there a few times. I'm a Marine but I have to say I can't help but feel enormous pride and a get lump in my throat watching those Old Guard soldiers do their thing.

I have visited there, and I even worked there -- in the Old Guard -- with SFC Boots Attaway. I was in Honor Guard Company, in the firing platoon, and we did lots of funerals in Arlington. I also tried out for Tomb Guard, but I left after the two-week trial period, because I did not feel I was right for that job. That was in 1978/1979, and since then I've visited the Tomb and Arlington National Cemetery several times.

CW5 (Join to see) and SFC Boots Attaway my hats to both of your for your service in the Old Guard. When I was stationed at the Pentagon living on Ft Myer I watched the Old Guard in action through all types of weather scorching sun to blistering cold. Although I did chuckle when they deployed to President Nixon's funeral with golf clubs and blues in hand.

I was there on Memorial Day in 1978, SGT Steven Montgomery, when President Carter visited the Tomb. That's also the closest I've ever been to a President. He walked right in front of me. I was holding one of the state flags along his path to the Tomb.

CW5 (Join to see), SGT Jim Z. , the worst was Carters inauguration. I was a "Gatekeeper" for the swearing in and part of the OGs marching element for the parade. They stopped the parade to "TIE" Amy's shoe, man were we pissed because it was cold. Then there was the Panama Canal Talks. We were at the WH for a week and had lunch every day with Carter. He was in the dinning room and we were in the theater. He had good food and we had box lunches.

I live just outside DC.

Hallowed Ground... I have never been able to find other words more apt.

If you ever get the chance to visit the landmarks of DC, I'd recommend visiting this, the Wall, and the Korea Memorial (which when there is snow, is frankly awe inspiring). I'd also recommend the Marine Corps Museum in Triangle, which is just outside MCB Quantico. All of the Smithsonians are worth it as well... DC is loaded with history.
