Where can retirees find a sense of community?

I've got a friend who transitioned off active duty recently and he told me he misses the sense of community he found with others when deployed.
I recently transitioned off active duty myelf and didn't think I would find it again, but I did, and it was in a place I didn't expect: working at Chick Fil-A. There is a strong commitment to high standards and teamwork, and that is one of the main reasons I actually like the job.
What are some other suggestions I can take to my friend?

Teaching emotionally disturbed teens at a residential treatment facility. The other people there were an incredibly dedicated and hard working group. After one year back in college I got a provisional teaching certificate, and a year later had my SpecEd full certification. GI Bill paid it all. No regrets.

Working as an Army Civilian feels a lot like the best parts of being in the Army.

Lots of places, local VA clinic/hospital, Habitat for Humanity, Patriot Guard Riders, Meals on Wheels ( serves a lot of Vets). Just limited by your area and mindset.
