Can I earn a (non-medical) PhD in STEM while serving in the military?

I know of people working towards their PhD full-time while serving and getting full-time salary in exchange of 6 years of service after they graduate.
- how does this program work?
- does this program only apply to medical PhD courses? I want to get a PhD in public health, would I qualify for this program?
- can I start working on my PhD through this program while I'm enlisted or do I have to be an officer?
- I'm a non-citizsn with MS. Can I start working on my PhD while I'm waiting to put in my direct commission (DC) packet?
- Alternatively, if I've put in DC packet and waiting on decision, can I enroll in this program?
- does this program only apply to certain schools? Say I want to get a PhD from Harvard's school of public health, can I do that through this program?
- anything dos/don'ts or other info I should know about these PhD programs?

Also you can look into an army SMART scholarship where they'll pay for school in exchange for you working as an Army Civilian Engineer afterwards.

Yes, you need to find a blended program or an online program. I'm in a blended program.

So you're serving while earning your PhD? Great! Is your program STEM non-medical field of your choice or are you doing something army wanted you to do sothey would foot the bill? Is the school of your choice or is it a military school? Does army pay you for days you're on campus? Are you using your GI bill to cover for school or is army paying for school as well as paying your salary? Sorry I don't mean to be intrusive on the details, I just want to know how it works. Thank you so much.

I'm in a Doctor of Education in Leadership program. I have friends who completed master's degree with me who went stem non medical. It can be done, there are programs out there. One thing you could investigate is opportunities through the graduate schools the military operates.

I forgot to address the tuition part. I blew through all of my GI Bill long ago, so I am paying for it. But, if you have GI Bill remaining, it would cover. The Post 9/11 will not only pay for it, but will give you a stipend each month and pay for your books as well.
