Tattered flag harlem
I live in an area the is a bit heavy on flag display. I feel that this is a good thing in general, but I sometime feel people are doing this for the same reason they put "support the troops" stickers.

I have seen flags left in rain, hanging at night with no light, hanging in tatters and even inferior to a church flag.

What are your thought on the display of "Old Glory"?

I don't have time to be a huge stickler on flag code (which is a set of suggestions more than requirements). HOWEVER, if the flag is falling apart, take the damn thing down, give it to some Boy Scouts for proper disposal and replace it already! A tattered flag just proves its there because you think you have to have it rather than any real desire to fly the colors.

Going all nuts over it just furthers the public perception that vets are all nut jobs a split second from snapping over something "trivial." (note the quotes around trivial!)

We used the Boy Scouts to retire our flag. It was nice to have the community involved to do that.

I did it as a Boy Scout. It was a very big deal to my 13 yo self to take part in the ceremony. It's still one of my greatest memories!

At our American Legion Post 208, Millis, MA we collect flags that have served their Honorable purpose and and in a ceremony on Flag Day each year or other times as needed pay honor to that flag and dispose of it properly. The Boys Scout Troop our post sponsors participate in that ceremony. We display the American flag on both the front and back entrance of the post and also on a flag pole located on the post ground in front. There is also a war Memorial in a park across the street with a flag pole and a church across the street from that and several houses in that neighborhood with American flags displayed.

No vote because there is no option for considering that the disrespect is not done on purpose.

I display my American flag (higher position) and a USMC flag on a thirty foot flagpole in my front yard 24/7. There is a light that shines on the flag with a light sensor that turns it on and off. I do NOT take it down during inclement weather as I feel it represents my love and respect for my country in good times and in bad times. I do wonder why the comment about a religious flag. I feel we are "one nation UNDER God" and have always been taught that the only flag that would take a superior rating to the American flag would be one representing God.

So you would have no heartburn is seeing the U.S. Flag flown inferior to the Papal Flag?

I would remember that freedom to religious beliefs is something promised to American citizens. I do not have any right to dictate what religious belief should be expressed. Having said that, I would not agree that the Papal Flag would qualify as it stands for the Vatican City and not specifically for a deity. I would not want any flag representing any "state" or country to take precedence over our flag. I am not familiar with the significance to the Catholic faith so if I am in error, I would apologize as my intent was not to offend.

Christian theology demands loyalty to God above all, so I wouldn't be too terribly upset about a Catholic Church placing the Papal flag over the American one.

SPC Jan Allbright, M.Sc., R.S. Within the Flag Code, and part of Naval Traditions:

§175. Position and manner of display

"(c) No other flag or pennant should be placed above or, if on the same level, to the right of the flag of the United States of America, except during church services conducted by naval chaplains at sea, when the church pennant may be flown above the flag during church services for the personnel of the Navy..."

This applies specifically to the 'Church Pennant' as opposed to the Papal Flag, but it highlights the issue.
