I was having a discussion with my 14 yr old daughter this morning in route to her school. We where talking about "bullying". I don't agree with fighting, just to fight. I do however FULL believe in defending ones self. When I was in school we fought the bullies! We whipped them or got whipped, end of story. Either way 9 times out of 10 the bully left you alone because you stood up for yourself.
Is it just me or have we as a society gotten so political correct that we teach or children to walk away and take the abuse! I understand that every situation can't be solved by fighting but when is enough enough.
She isn't being bullied but she sees it. They report it to the teachers, they are sent to the office and return to the class to do it all over. In my day we settled it. After school. There was no guns involved, or knives. Yes we brought friends to keep the other friends outof the fray but we settled it then and there. Sometimes it was a miss understanding and there was never fight and we choose to not understand and walked away. There was a couple of time that we fought. I got whipped and the other got whipped. One of them turned into a great friend and we lost touch after high school, but we solved it.
Am I just old fashioned or just totally wrong.

I remember the sense of liberation the first time I stood up to a bully. His first swing was a miss. My first, second, and third punch split his lip so bad that he needed 17 stitches to close it up, and knocked out a tooth. Then his second punch broke my nose. Then the PE teacher carried us by the belt loops to the principals office (Thank God). I never regretted that fight. I lost more fights than I won. I never regretted the losses.

I regret every fight that I didn't start, but walked away from, without taking a poke.

The modern world has become very aggressive and cruel, and I believe that this problem is urgently needed to be addressed. Even on the internet, there are cases of cyber-bullying that are increasing every day. Cadet SGT (Join to see) - The world has ALWAYS been aggressive and cruel. And I believe , we will never eliminate bullying, no matter what we do to address it. We don't do kids any favors by sheltering them from real-life. It is our job in a loving and caring way to teach them to both toughen up, and to land some blows (physical and psychological) that make it not worth the bully's while.

I think you are spot on. I have taught my kids that they are not to stand by and be bullied, or passivly watch someone else be bullied. I expect them to act!

We teach our kids to try the proper channels first, if time the situation allows, but if they have to go hands on they better be able to answer for their actions and I better believe they were justified.

In my house the only time you will hear the term "PC" is when I am talking about work as an IT guy, period. Politically correctness in my opinion follows the same lines as most unions. The original intent had merit, but then it has outlived its usefulness and has in many ways gone the opposite of the original intent.
