Reclass in the national guard. I want to reclass, my current contract is for 3 years, i do have a bonus but it has not been paid to me at all. It was suppose to in February but it hasnt been dealt with since covid. So can i reclass without penalty? Ive read the contract and it just says whatever amount ive received id have to pay back in full if i fail to complete my obligation. But i havent received any.

ONe you need to get with your CoC on this and have them work for you to get your bonus. If you reclass prior to your terms of your contract for your bonus you lose the bonus or potential of it and have to pay it back, if you get it before you reclass... so yes there is the penalty.

You only pay back whatever portion of your bonus contract you didn't fulfill. If you have a 3 year contract for $6,000, but you only serve 2 years in that MOS, then you would keep $4,000 (before taxes) and would incur a debt for $2,000. If you give us more information (how much was your bonus, how far along you are in your contract, etc.), I can give you a more definitive answer.

I was given a 20K bonus for 3 years. I am almost at one year but none of it has been paid to me

SPC (Join to see) - If it was me, first, I would start talking to my FTUS about getting my bonus, if you were supposed to receive it in February. I would make sure I have the bonus before I changed MOSs; it's easier to pay back a debt because you got too much than to fight to get paid when you haven't received anything. Just remember that you will receive the bonus after taxes, but you will have to repay the pre-tax amount (make sure you remember that come tax return time). If you did 12 out of 36 months, you would pay back 2/3 of the 20k. I'm not sure what MOS you are looking at switching to, but it may be possible to keep the bonus if that MOS also rates a bonus.

SPC (Join to see) - Also, if you're in the Guard now, you should update your account to reflect that and your current unit of assignment. It will make answering questions easier in the future if we can see your branch and unit, especially since many of us might have contacts in that state/unit that can help you out.
