70th Anniversary of D-Day

This June 6th marks the 70th Anniversary of D-Day. Are you planning on doing anything special to mark the day. Since it is not a national holiday do you do anything different to show your appreciation for the service people of all nations who took part in the Allied Victory of this landing?

I'll be pulling a 24 on the 6th so I'll probably just end up watching all the classics on tv. The Navy doesn't seem to embrace D-Day and their participation in it. I understand why we uphold the importance of Midway in the Navy, but we should be proud of the role we Sailors played in Operation Overlord.

I will be remembering the good times I had with my wife's grandfather, who recently passed away, and his service on that day. He was wounded in the initial landing at Omaha Beach with C 3/16IN, and lived to a ripe old age playing many rounds of cribbage with this young Soldier. I may also cruse the History Channel for some historic programming appropriate to teach my children how important the operation was.

MCPO, 1st off I am so grateful for these men and women ..swelling with pride (me) ..what I am going to do is reflect on their gallant service to our country and be thankful that I do not speak German, not that that is a bad thing, however I speak English and we are still called The United States Of America, tommorrow D Day + 1 I am volunteering as a staff member for a Mud run proceeds go to all kinds of originazitions , Wounded Warriors, Homeless Veterans just to name a few, further more every time I see Old Glory..I see the sacrifice it has taken ( For Those Who Fought For It, Freedom has the Flavor, The Protected Will Never Know) .Basically I will have my own moment of silence for those gallent men and women. Thank You for The opportunity to chime in on this thread.

I take some time to go through some old photos from D-Day and read accounts from veterans who were there. Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps and tons of respect for what those veterans went through.

When I'm at home, I try to take the time to explain all the holidays and memorable events to my kids so they don't get lost in the commercialization of the historically significant occasions. Being TDY today, not much I can do as I'm waiting to return back to Kuwait. But I do think as a country, the schools should place a bit more emphasis on teaching proper history to our children. Makes me think twice about my career options when I get out, maybe become a history teacher...

When I was a very young man the principal of my elementary school was a D-Day veteran, Mr. Claus Mann, he parachuted into Normandy with the 101st.
